Course overview

The aim of this course is to provide students with knowledge and understanding of the gross anatomy of the human body. Contents include: anatomical terminology, regions and planes; upper limb; lower limb; head, thorax; abdomen; pelvis; spine; bones; joints; muscles; soft tissues; organ systems, surface anatomy.

Course learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate knowledge of anatomical terminology of directions, planes, motions and major tissues.
  • Use respectful language and behaviour in handling, positioning and palpating specimens and fellow students.
  • Accurately locate and name clinically relevant surface anatomy features.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of bone structure, major blood vessels and function of muscle groups, and nerve innervation of muscle groups of the limbs, spine, trunk and thorax.
  • Name and describe the function of the major organs of the digestive, respiratory, urinary and reproductive systems.
  • Identify and name the bones of the face and cranium.
