Course overview

This course aims to provide students with a foundational understanding of human physiology through the integration of basic cell biology, tissue structure, and the function of major body systems. Core principles of homeostasis and regulation are introduced, including feedback mechanisms, cellular structure and function, and tissue organisation. Building on this foundation, students examine neural and muscular communication and the physiological function of the skeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, and digestive systems. Students develop an understanding of the mechanisms that maintain normal physiological function and the consequences of disrupted homeostasis. Through practical activities, the course also develops skills in measuring basic physiological parameters, collaborative teamwork, and the application of scientific inquiry to physiological questions.

Course learning outcomes

  • Explain the principle of homeostasis and the underlying principles of physiological regulation through feedback mechanisms and the integrative nature of body systems
  • Describe the key role(s) and functions of cells, tissues and neural communication to develop an understanding of their pivotal role in physiological processes throughout the human body
  • Describe in detail the composition and functions of muscle, skeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory and digestive systems
  • Recognise the limitations of normal physiological function
  • Develop teamwork and critical thinking skills through the collection, analysis, and application of physiological data to address physiological questions.
