Course overview

This course uses the knowledge and understanding gained in the prerequisite Level I courses to provide a deeper appreciation of key molecular processes that occur within cells. The topics covered include (i) the relationship between protein structure and function, using as examples enzymes and other specialised proteins, (ii) processes involving DNA including the basis of DNA structure, DNA synthesis and repair, and (iii) RNA synthesis and the translation of RNA to produce proteins. These themes come together as we examine key pathways utilised to control gene expression. The course combines lectures/seminars and tutorials that reinforce the lecture content.

Course learning outcomes

  • Understand aspects of protein structure and function, including the molecular basis of enzyme activity
  • Demonstrate an understanding of DNA structure, DNA replication and DNA repair
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the control of prokaryote and eukaryote gene expression
  • Understand the molecular basis of protein synthesis in prokaryotes and eukaryotes
  • Interpret, analyse and effectively communicate basic experimental data and conclusions of scientific research

  • Must have completed all of BIOL1003 Biology 1A: Molecules, Genes and Cells/CHEM1000 Foundations in Chemistry AND ( must have completed all of HBIO1002 Human Anatomy and Physiology A/HBIO1003 Human Anatomy and Physiology B OR must have completed BIOL1031 Biology 1C: Molecular Biology and Biomedical Science)
