Course overview
This is an introductory course that provides a strong grounding in the basic biology of microbes, as well as aspects of molecular biology, microbial genetics, pathogenesis and antimicrobial resistance. Emphasis is placed on microbial relationships to humans and the environment, as well as biotechnology applications for therapeutic and industrial uses

Course learning outcomes
- Explain the fundamental structural, physiological and genetic features of microbes, and how these features contribute to growth, adaptation and survival
- Summarise key mechanisms in microbial pathogenesis, including transmission, colonisation and damage to the host
- Articulate the mechanisms by which DNA is transmitted between bacteria, and the implications of this transmission for bacterial adaptation
- Describe techniques and technologies used to identify microbes and control their growth in environmental, laboratory and clinical contexts
- Outline simple experimental designs related to the practice of microbiology, and demonstrate understanding of the range of techniques required to investigate microbes of interest
- Reflect on and articulate the implications of Antimicrobial Resistance in the context of human and/or animal infections
