Course overview
This course covers major conceptual and technical advances underpinning the molecular basis of cancer and explores how this knowledge is applied to understand, diagnose and treat cancer. Topics are focused on the hallmarks of cancer, encompassing contributions of both tumour cells and the non-tumour microenvironment. Specific examples are included of current diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for cancer treatment.
- Introduction to cancer
- Cancer impacts on cell growth and survival
- Cancer impacts on the microenvironment
Course learning outcomes
- Analyse the molecular basis of the initiation and progression of cancer
- Evaluate molecular approaches used in cancer diagnosis, prognosis and treatment
- Design experimental strategies to investigate questions in cancer biology
- Critically evaluate scientific literature related to the molecular basis of cancer
- Communicate scientific concepts effectively in teams and with professional stakeholders
- Reflect and discuss how the field of cancer biology has progressed and your thinking about cancer research has changed
