Course overview
This practical course will consolidate the biochemical concepts covered in Level II and Level III Biochemistry lecture courses. The practical exercises will be centred around a real-world research project where the experimental outcome is unknown, giving students an insight into the excitement of discovering new information. Research project themes will align with the major concepts covered in level 3 lectures including cutting edge techniques in recombinant DNA technology, protein expression and purification, synthetic biology or cancer research/drug discovery.
- Biochemistry project
Course learning outcomes
- Demonstrate hands-on practical experimental skills and techniques frequently used in biomedical research, as it relates to biochemistry
- Demonstrate essential skills in experimental design, results, analysis and problem solving
- Demonstrate appropriate application of computer-based tools to investigate biochemical research questions
- Work effectively in small teams and communicate outcomes with a larger group of colleagues
- Demonstrate safe laboratory practise
