Course overview
This course provides students with vital skills for professional placements and research pathways. Building upon SCIE 2000 (Scientific Data: Analysis and Visualisation), students will apply modern statistical approaches to analyse and interpret real-world datasets from the fields of ecology, marine biology, and wildlife conservation. Using R statistical software, students will employ different data types to answer a range of applied questions, from identifying the drivers of species distributions and population dynamics, to classifying the provenance of seafood and quantifying how environmental gradients shape biological communities.
- Inference & Linear Models
- Generalised Models & Extensions
- Multivariate Analysis
- Ecological Models
Course learning outcomes
- Understand and explain sampling and experimental designs in the ecological and biological sciences.
- Apply appropriate statistical techniques to real-world data, evaluate their underlying assumptions, and interpret and communicate results accurately and clearly.
- Use R to manipulate and visualise data and to conduct statistical modelling and hypothesis testing.
- Critically evaluate and interpret a range of models used to analyse complex patterns and relationships in biological systems.
