Course overview

This course aims to build on foundational knowledge of evolutionary biology to provide the advanced concepts and background to accompany practical experience in Level 3. Students will develop advanced theoretical understanding of modern advances in systematics, micro and macro-evolution, palaeontology and palaeobiology. A theme explored in detail throughout the course will be the evolutionary history and contemporary diversity of the Australian biota.

  • Australia through deep time
  • Australia’s changing climate
  • Contemporary evolution in Australia

Course learning outcomes

  • Critically evaluate concepts in evolutionary biology
  • Synthesise processes in evolutionary biology to understand the drivers of biodiversity
  • Evaluate the role of the fossil record underpinning evolution of Australian biota
  • Communicate effective evidence-based interpretations of evolutionary concepts to Australian biota
