Course overview

This course is designed to provide learners with the broad range of skills required for a career in biomedical biotechnology. Learners will collaborate with their peers to plan, execute, and analyse laboratory experiments to solve real-world research problems. They will uncover novel insights into important biotechnology questions, developing the skills to communicate their results to a broad scientific audience. Students will cultivate a range of professional skills such as managing meetings, documenting plans and outcomes, data management, and multimedia communication – important skills for biotechnology research and industry, and readily transferable to other professional employment contexts. The importance of teamwork in professional environments is emphasised and students given tools to improve and monitor group dynamics, including an awareness of emotional intelligence, and decision-making skills. This capstone course serves as the culmination of the Master of Science (Biotechnology) program, integrating and applying learners’ knowledge and skills in real-world biotechnology scenarios.

Course learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and insightful understanding of a sub-field within biomedical biotechnology.
  • Critically analyse scientific literature in the field of biomedical biotechnology to explain and substantiate research gaps, and define the important elements required for their solutions.
  • Plan, execute, and evaluate laboratory experiments in a group environment to address specific project goals.
  • Effectively communicate scientific concepts, including research findings and their significance to society, to an educated scientific audience in both written and oral modes.
  • Collaborate effectively, responsibly, and ethically with individuals or teams in a research environment, to achieve research goals.
  • Adhere to scientific regulatory requirements and research integrity standards for data collection, storage, analysis, and documentation.
