Course overview

This course aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to manage following critical aspects of construction management: sustainability, construction safety and procurement. Following a life cycle approach, this course provides opportunities to have a comprehensive understanding of impacts of construction activities and procurement approaches on the safety and sustainability performance of construction projects. By learning principles in lectures and practicing in tutorials, students will develop critical skills on managing these key aspects of construction management. This course aligns with the program's intent to prepare future leaders of the construction industry that have to deal with critical challenges in environmental and social impacts of construction project, safety hazards and alternative procurement strategies.

Course learning outcomes

  • Differentiate various procurement routes and select the appropriate procurement method for building and infrastructure projects
  • Critically examine safety related challenges and corresponding measures for building and infrastructure projects
  • Identify and manage stakeholders in the construction sector and the project environment
  • Identify key principles of sustainable development and the role of sustainable construction technologies
  • Critically examine the resource efficiency issues (e.g. reuse and recycled materials, energy efficiency) in building and infrastructure projects
  • Demonstrate the understanding of using life cycle approach to manage construction projects
