Course overview

This course aims to introduce students to the fundamental environmental chemistry principles that underpin many of the major environmental processes occurring in the world today. This course is specifically designed for students who do not have a strong foundation in chemistry, so that chemical basics are introduced before applying them to interesting environmental issues. The main goal is to produce graduates that are comfortable applying environmental chemistry knowledge and methods to real world situations. The course is “hands on”, students learn by undertaking real world environmental sampling and analysis, thus delivering an authentic learning experience.

  • Natural waters
  • Soils and sediments
  • Urban water
  • Atmospherre

Course learning outcomes

  • Recognise key concepts relating to the chemistry of both natural and urban environmental systems, including application of key environmental quality indicators
  • Discuss process changes in environmental ecosystems using fundamental chemistry principles
  • Collect and process environmental samples for analysis
  • Analyse, interpret and report results from environmental samples
  • Communicate ideas relating to environmental chemistry in written, visual and/or oral forms
