Course overview
This course aims to develop the capability to interpret and convey geological relationships across multiple spatial and temporal scales via independent geological mapping. Students apply field observations, structural and stratigraphic principles, and geospatial data to investigate, identify and analyse rock units and their relationships. Students will also integrate their own field observations with published datasets to construct geological maps and develop models that effectively demonstrate and communicate the geological evolution of the study area. An emphasis is placed on extrapolating and synthesising evidence to reconstruct tectonic, depositional, and Earth system processes. The analytical and interpretative skills developed are transferable to a wide range of geological settings.

Course learning outcomes
- Demonstrate professional and ethical conduct during geological fieldwork, working effectively and responsibly in team environments
- Apply field-based methods to systematically identify, measure, and document geological features, including lithologies, structures, and stratigraphic relationships.
- Construct geological maps, cross-sections, and other spatial representations that integrate field data and geological interpretations.
- Analyse structural and sedimentological data during fieldwork to create first order interpretations on geological relationships and regional deformation processes.
- Integrate geological field observations and first order interpretations to reconstruct the geological and tectonic evolution of a study area.
- Synthesise field observations with published geological data to evaluate and effectively communicate the regional and broader geological context of the study area.
