Course overview
This course aims to develop students’ capacity for independent scientific inquiry through the design and completion of an original project in the Earth sciences. By formulating research questions, developing field and/or laboratory-based research plans, and collecting and critically analysing data, students will work with an academic supervisor to deepen their understanding of scientific practice and develop advanced skills in project management, research conduct, and scholarly communication.

Course learning outcomes
- Develop a research plan based upon a well-defined hypotheses and the integration of existing knowledge and published research within the relevant field/s of research.
- Plan and conduct field-based, laboratory-based and/or office-based research in a safe and professional manner ensuring adherence to relevant university and external organisation policies, data management requirements, and research integrity standards.
- Plan, conduct, and meticulously document scientific experiments, data collection and observations to ensure accuracy, reproducibility and traceability of results
- Employ appropriate statistical and/or data visualisation techniques to critically analyse experimental or observational data and interpret results within the context of existing scientific knowledge.
- Effectively present scientific research findings in both written and oral forms, tailoring communication to both specialist and general audiences.
