Course overview

This course aims to provide students with a foundational understanding of concepts related to radiation physics. The course will delve into nuclear structures, radioactivity, and properties of energy transfers before this theory then being propelled into real-world applications of radiation and radioactive material use and detection. Through examining the foundational principles of radiation physics, students will develop critical thinking and scientific writing skills required for effective management of radioactive materials. This course aligns with the programs intent to provide a breadth of foundational knowledge required for effective management of radiation and radioactive materials.

  • Atoms and Radioactivity
  • Radiation Interaction and Energy Deposition
  • Real-World Applications
  • Detection
  • Dose and Dosimetry

Course learning outcomes

  • Define fundamental aspects of radiation physics, including the structure of the atom, radioactive decay, and the natural decay series.
  • Compare the concepts of energy deposition during interactions of radiation and matter.
  • Summarise applications of radiation and radioactive materials across various sectors.
  • Classify and explain radiation detection techniques across different radiation types.
  • Classify radiation dosimetry and recognise modelling strategies related to radiation science.
  • Keep a scientific record of experimental work, analyse the results, and conclude findings of experiments related to alpha particle and gamma ray properties and natural radioactivity detection.
