Course overview

This course aims to provide learners with an understanding of the management of radioactive sources and materials. The course will begin with legislative and regulatory requirements that oversee radiation management before exploring the principles of radiation protection and how they are applied in shielding, transport, and storage of radioactive materials, and used to protect against various exposure routes. Through this, learners will develop critical thinking and scientific writing skills required for effective management of radioactive materials. This course aligns with the program’s intent to provide a breadth of foundational knowledge required for effective management of radiation and radioactive materials.

Course learning outcomes

  • Recall international and national standards, regulations models, and regulatory bodies related with the management of radioactive sources and materials
  • Classify the principles of radiation protection and demonstrate applications across shielding, transport, and storage
  • Classify types of radioactive waste, explain related storage requirements, and evaluate social, environmental, economic and additional factors that could contribute to appropriate site selections
  • Summarise radiation exposure pathways in the environment and they can accumulate in biological systems
  • Describe and compare dose characteristics and assessment methods between internal and external exposures
  • Safety apply laboratory techniques to identify alpha and gamma radiation using spectrometry

Prerequisite(s)

  • Must have completed all of EART5007 Radioactivity, Radiation Detection and Dosimetry/EART5008 Radiation Biology and Incident Response

Corequisite(s)

  • If the following course has not already been completed THEN must be enrolled in EART5010 Radiation Safety in the Workplace
