Course overview

The aim of the course is to develop an understanding of the goals, purposes and strategies for teaching mathematics in the primary years of schooling and build students capacity to plan, resource and teach conceptually developmental mathematical learning experiences. Students will examine the nature of specialised content knowledge for teaching mathematics, and pedagogical practices appropriate for primary mathematics. This course focuses on planning mathematical learning experiences with a clear emphasis on learning intentions, success criteria and formative assessment.

Course learning outcomes

  • Unpack mathematics curriculum content descriptors by identifying key mathematical concepts, relevant terminology, and creating aligned learning intentions with appropriate success criteria
  • Plan learning experiences and sequences that align with relevant curriculum framework
  • Select, critique and apply strategies for teaching mathematics in the primary years such as explicit teaching, modelling and scaffolding practices
  • Select, evaluate, and use a range of resources to engage students in learning mathematics
  • Plan and sequence content and tasks so that they become increasingly challenging and incorporate spacing and retrieval practice
