Course overview

This course aims to develop deep understanding of traditional, contemporary and emerging arts content and practices, their application to the curriculum and the role/s of a generalist primary school teacher with an arts curriculum specialisation.

Course learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the role and function of the arts in diverse contemporary communities and their impact upon young people
  • Identify traditional and contemporary approaches to the arts in curriculum decision making and research
  • Experience creative body-based learning in physical, digital and virtual spaces
  • Apply current approaches to technology in working with digital and media arts
  • Identify Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts as intrinsic to Australian histories and cultural knowledge
  • Articulate the intrinsic and instrumental value of visual arts, media arts, dance, drama and music in the school curriculum
  • Demonstrate reflective practice in working as an active teacher/artist educator with young people
