Course overview

This course examines English curriculum content, design, literary pedagogy and assessment for the secondary years. Pre-service teachers will critically evaluate theoretical frameworks and research underpinning English education, design sophisticated and inclusive learning sequences, and develop the professional capacity to lead transformative English teaching practice in middle secondary contexts. They will evaluate and reflect critically on aspects of their professional practice.

Course learning outcomes

  • Critically synthesise and apply advanced literary knowledge to the selection and appraisal of literary texts relevant for study in English at secondary level.
  • Evaluate and critique a range of English pedagogical approaches constructing evidence-based arguments for inclusive and culturally responsive practice.
  • Design and justify complex, theoretically grounded English lessons that respond to diverse learner needs, identities and backgrounds in secondary contexts.
  • Critically evaluate the scope and sequence of secondary English curricula
