Course overview
This aim of this course is to extend preservice teachers' capacity for self-reflection to support their personal growth and development as teachers of mathematics. Students will critically examine the domains of mathematical knowledge for teaching and research-informed strategies that emphasise teaching for understanding, evaluate research on mathematical learning, and design, justify and evaluate learning experiences for diverse learners.
Course learning outcomes
- Critically evaluate and apply research-informed strategies for teaching mathematics in the middle years, justifying pedagogical choices in response to learner needs and contexts.
- Critically examine and reflect on personal and professional assumptions about the nature of mathematics taught in schools, analysing how these inform and shape development as a teacher of mathematics.
- Critically evaluate, select and apply a range of resources to support and enhance student learning in mathematics, justifying choices with reference to research and learner needs.
- Design, justify and evaluate learning experiences and sequences for particular contexts and purposes, aligned with relevant curriculum frameworks.
- Observe, analyse and interpret teacher practice in mathematics classrooms using research-informed frameworks, connecting observed approaches to evidence on student learning.
