Course overview
This course provides an advanced examination of the theories, research and pedagogy underpinning reading development and instruction. Students will critically evaluate evidence on reading acquisition, phonics, multimodality and comprehension, and design sophisticated, inclusive approaches to teaching reading that respond to diverse learner needs across primary settings.
Course learning outcomes
- Critically synthesise and evaluate theoretical frameworks and current research on reading development, constructing advanced understandings of the linguistic, cognitive and contextual dimensions of reading proficiency across diverse text types and learner groups.
- Appraise and apply subject matter expertise in literacy instruction and reading pedagogies, including phonics and the explicit teaching of reading in subjects other than English
- Design and critically evaluate sophisticated, theoretically justified instructional plans that integrate a wide repertoire of pedagogical strategies; including explicit, dialogic, embodied, multimodal and arts-based approaches to meet the needs of all learners
- Critically analyse classroom texts using metalinguistic and structural frameworks, constructing and justifying evidence-based strategies for supporting meaning-making and comprehension for diverse learners.
- Interpret and critically evaluate multiple forms of reading assessment data to make judgements about learner development and generate evidence-based plans for the teaching of reading in diverse contexts.
