Course overview
This course examines key constructs in how children learn science as the basis for planning and assessing learning experiences across the primary years. Students will critically evaluate inquiry-based and social constructivist perspectives on learning, investigate current pedagogies for thinking and working scientifically, and design, justify and evaluate units of work that build inquiry skills, develop conceptual understanding across the science disciplines, and connect to real-world contexts.

Course learning outcomes
- Critically analyse key aspects of thinking and working scientifically and the role of scientific inquiry in planning for learning across diverse primary contexts
- Design a sequence of science learning experiences that incorporate a range of pedagogical strategies to engage learners in thinking and working scientifically, and to build and assess understanding across all three strands of the Australian Curriculum: Science
- Critically evaluate, select and apply a range of resources, including digital resources, to support and assess children's scientific understanding, justifying choices.
- Understand explicit teaching, modelling and scaffolding practices and explain how these support how a student’s brain learns and critically evaluating the evidence base that underpins these approaches and their application across diverse primary science contexts
