Course overview
This course provides an advanced analysis of the goals, theories and research underpinning mathematics education in the primary years. Students will critically evaluate pedagogical approaches and design conceptually rich mathematical learning experiences that respond to learner diversity, leverage digital tools, and embed formative assessment within curriculum frameworks.

- Critically analyse and deconstruct mathematics curriculum content descriptors, generating learning progressions with theoretically justified learning intentions, success criteria and differentiation strategies.
- Design and evaluate conceptually developmental learning sequences that align with curriculum frameworks and respond to the mathematical needs of all learners.
- Appraise and integrate digital technologies and manipulatives as pedagogical tools, critically evaluating their impact on student conceptual understanding in mathematics.
- Synthesise evidence from formative assessment data to make informed, adaptive decisions about mathematics instruction that improve outcomes for diverse learners.
- Design and evaluate instructional sequences that embed spacing, retrieval practice and progressive challenge, using cognitive load research to justify sequencing decisions.
