Course overview
This course will introduce students to construction engineering. The content of the course includes project delivery methods, first principles estimating, cost planning and scheduling, contracts and specifications. This course will feature guest speakers from the construction industry and will also visit a construction site, which will form the basis of the major project that underpins this course. The ability to read and interpret drawings is a key learning outcome of this course. Students will also be introduced to methods of construction associated with earthworks, concrete and steel.

- Explain contractual arrangements that may be adopted in the construction industry
- Explain how the estimation process is influenced by the transfer of risk for different project delivery methods
- Identify how a project scope is broken up into a series of trade packages for construction
- Estimate construction timelines and costs
- Read and interpret technical engineering drawings
- Prepare a site visit report to a professional standard
