Course overview
The reuse of structures is central to achieving environmental sustainability, this course introduces students to the concept of adaptive reuse including an introduction to the assessment of existing structures and the design of retrofits to strengthen steel, concrete and masonry elements.
- Assessment of an Existing Structure
- Retrofitting
- Holistic evaluation of Adaptive Reuse Proposals
Course learning outcomes
- Assess the current state of a building and load paths using available documentation such as construction drawings, photographs and forensic reports.
- Review the capacity of a structure considering historical and current loads, load factors and design capacity factors.
- Design the structural requirements required to retrofit a structure for both vertical and lateral loading paths.
- Evaluate the socio-economic and technical feasibility of an adaptive reuse scenario, incorporating cost, embodied carbon and utility value of presented options.
