Course overview

This course introduces students to the use of advanced numerical methods in the analysis of structures involving common construction materials. Treatment of this topic is intended to focus on application while providing the key underlying theoretical basis of the methods employed.

  • Stiffness Method
  • Direct Stiffness Method
  • Finite Element Method

Course learning outcomes

  • Apply the underlaying techniques of the matrix method to analyse 1D, 2D and 3D truss structures by solving small size numerical examples of trusses in the form of hand calculations.
  • Apply the underlaying techniques of the matrix method to analyse beams, 2D frame, grillage frame, and 3D frame structures by solving small size numerical examples of frames in the form of hand calculations.
  • Apply the underlaying techniques of the finite element method to analyse different type of structures idealised as plane stress, plane strain, axisymmetric, and 3D solid problems by employing them in the computer-based project.
  • Apply the underlaying techniques of the finite element method to analyse plate and shell of structures by employing them in the computer-based project.
  • Analyse big size real life complex structures of all types mentioned above by applying a commercially available computer software and in-house developed computer codes after undertaking necessary modifications/extensions of the codes to incorporate new capabilities.
