Course overview

This course aims to provide students with an understanding, skills, and knowledge of traffic flow theory, traffic control devices, and travel demand forecast models. It will also emphasise the importance of effectively communicating technical materials to high-level decision-makers through industry-standard software.

  • Traffic Flow Theory and Simulation
  • Traffic Signal Design
  • Transport demand forecast model

Course learning outcomes

  • Explain traffic flow theory, microscopic simulation models and traffic signal design principles.
  • Apply simulation and analytical tools to evaluate road network performance using industry-standard software.
  • Analyse and assess traffic signal performance using industry-standard software.
  • Apply statistical and mathematical techniques for each stage of the travel demand forecasting process.
  • Develop a four-stage travel demand forecast model and calibrate it using real or hypothetical data with industry-standard software.
  • Communicate technical information clearly through written reports.
