Course overview

This course aims to provide students with an in-depth view of the modern fibre communications technology and the photonic principles that underpin it, including an overview of fundamental and key enabling photonic technologies in modern fibre communication systems.

Course learning outcomes

  • Explain engineering fundamentals of photogeneration, photodetection, lightwave propagation, for optical communications
  • Design an analog optical communications system and perform link budget analysis
  • Design a digital optical communications system and perform a link budget analysis

  • Must have completed ENGE1000 Electrical and Electronic Systems AND must have completed ENGI2001 Engineering Modelling 2 AND must have completed ENGE2002 Signals and Systems
