Course overview

The engineering discipline is underpinned by the natural sciences. This course builds foundational knowledge in appropriate science topics to prepare engineering students for more advanced modelling courses. Students will complete general topics in dimensional analysis, unit conversion, and uncertainty, alongside specific topics in mechanics, heat transfer, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and electromagnetism.

  • Mechanics
  • Fluid Mechanics
  • Electromagnetism
  • Thermal Physics

Course learning outcomes

  • Qualitatively describe, explain and predict the behaviour of simple physical systems, using the fundamental laws, principles and concepts across a range of physics topics, including mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and electromagnetism.
  • Quantitatively analyse and solve simple physical systems using structured problem-solving techniques.
  • Apply scientific methods and techniques to collect and analyse experimental data.
  • Document the processes and approaches used when solving problems and working in a laboratory environment.
