Course overview
Engineering Geology and Surveying is a first-year course designed for civil engineering students. The course covers fundamental concepts such as geological processes, rock classification, stratigraphy, geological maps and cross-sections, theory, and use of surveying instruments. By exploring these essential topics, students will gain a robust understanding of geological principles and surveying techniques that underpin civil engineering projects, providing a solid foundation for their future studies in civil engineering.
- Geology
- Surveying
Course learning outcomes
- Understand the fundamentals of geology and recognize how geologic processes impact engineering and surveying
- Identify rocks and minerals using knowledge of how they form and their physical properties.
- Apply observational skills to recognise and interpret various 3D geological features from geological maps
- Examine the fundamentals of surveying and spatial sciences to recognise their practical applications and limitations.
- Collaboratively create, analyse and present spatial data.
