Course overview

This course extends conceptual and practical understanding from the introductory course - ENGIX501 Principles of Submarine Design - by expanding on a number and complexity of submarine systems, exploring specific technology areas in submarine systems design, as well as submarine building techniques and maintenance aspects.

To achieve its aim of enabling learners to gain an advanced understanding of submarine design and systems through systems engineering process up to practice into a project, the course will complete a detailed exploration of the design philosophies of conventional submarines and their use for Defence purposes started in the ENGIX501 Principles of Submarine Design course.

The learner will have a deeper exploration of the Platform systems and hull structures, whilst integrating them in a balanced submarine concept design and ensuring the transverse requirements (stealth and shock resistance) are met.

The evolution of combat systems in submarine technology will provide an opportunity to explore future trends.

The transition from design to actual construction will enable the learner to understand the practicalities and risk management in Defence maritime engineering, before exploring the asset management cycle, in particular from a submarine maintenance perspective.

Finally, the learner will be exposed to the challenge of transitioning from conventionally powered submarines to nuclear-powered platforms.
