Course overview

The course aims to provide comprehensive and practical understanding of the impacts both positive and negative that mining may have on society and the environment. It also provides an appreciation of management principles and practices vital to a mine manager’s successful running of a mining enterprise. Major topics on management to be covered are mining law, safety and risk management; minerals economics and mine cost structure; management fundamentals and mine operations management. On completion of this course, students should be able to identify, analyse and apply state-of-the-art techniques in environmental management of mine sites as well as identify major issues and management strategies associated with social/community impacts of mining in Australia and internationally.

Course learning outcomes

  • Discuss the concepts and techniques of the discipline at advanced levels that are internationally recognised
  • Locate, analyse, evaluate and synthesise relevant information from a wide variety of sources for real-life cases on (1) social-environmental impact of a mining/energy project, (2) a major industrial disaster, and (3) an industrial dispute to critically investigate these cases and suggest how they could have controlled or managed better, or avoided if possible
  • To apply effective, creative and innovative solutions, both independently and cooperatively, to current and future problems
  • Apply advanced interpersonal, teamwork and communication skills in variety of mining and environment-related contexts
  • Demonstrate commitment to continuous learning and the capacity to maintain intellectual curiosity throughout life by acquiring and further developing a mindset of curiosity, and critical thinking and problem-solving skills; proactively engaging with information; embracing diverse perspectives and viewing challenges as learning opportunities when working on the projects for the course.
