Course overview

This course gives the student from all engineering background an understanding of the basic principles of submarine design as a complex Defence system of systems, providing foundation knowledge from operational requirements to architecture and technologies delivering the capability. Learners will explore the whole spectrum of the submarine systems and iterative phases of development: unfolding various design philosophies from worldwide countries for the platform and combat systems so that students can interact with Defence professionals. This course fits in the Maritime Engineering program to enable learners to contribute to seaworthiness for submarines: fitness for purpose, safety to operate and environmental compliance.

Course learning outcomes

  • Identify submarines and design philosophies worldwide
  • Explain the systems engineering approach in the context of submarines and their systems
  • Explain the various balances to reach in order to prepare for seaworthiness demonstration
  • Compare design options and trade-offs to help achieve top level performances on submarines for resistance and energy/propulsion
  • Evaluate the fitness for purpose and safety of submarine systems
  • Develop a set of requirements for a submarine concept of operations CONOPS
