Course overview

Materials and Manufacturing will provide students with fundamentals of manufacturing engineering as well as experience of various manufacturing processes. From the knowledge of Engineering Materials and Engineering Design and Prototyping it will give the basis on how to transform materials into products. The learners will specify process parameters, design simple components to the guidelines of a manufacturing method and learn about high level aspects of manufacturing, with an emphasis on metallurgical approaches. This course will provide the basis for process design, design of product for manufacturing methods and process control.

Course learning outcomes

  • Explain the fundamentals of materials in manufacturing and mechanics in manufacturing processes.
  • Evaluate manufacturing processes and related tooling and be able to apply them into practice.
  • Apply analytical methods for understanding the process variables
  • Apply Design guidelines for specific process to fabricate a component.
  • Explain, analyse, predict and prevent material failures in primary manufacturing processes.
  • Explain the importance of economic and environmental factors when considering the application of a process;
  • Explain the high level concepts in manufacturing including industry transformation (industry 4.0), process optimisation (Lean), Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) aspects of manufacturing, and basics of production management systems
  • Demonstrate interpersonal understanding, teamwork and communication skills working on group assignments.
