Course overview
This course introduces engineering thermodynamics, including energy and entropy balance for closed and open systems, applications of thermodynamic principles in various cycles, and analysis of thermal energy conversion in a range of thermo-mechanical cycles required in the transition to Net Zero systems for energy production, transportation and industrial processes.
- 1st Law of Thermodynamics and Working Fluids
- 2nd Law of Thermodynamics and Entropy
- Standard Cycles in Real Applications
Course learning outcomes
- Explain basic concepts, definitions and principles in engineering thermodynamics.
- Apply the first law of thermodynamics to open and closed thermal systems and calculate their efficiencies.
- Quantitatively and qualitatively analyse and compare idealised and real processes and cycles, including evaluating isentropic and second-law efficiencies.
- Analyse typical thermodynamic processes and cycles using the laws of thermodynamics, ideal gas laws and fluid properties, including phase change.
- Relate environmental responsibility to current best practice for the design of efficient thermal system and cycles.
