Course overview

To introduce students to a broad range of materials used in the design and production of artefacts.

  • Emerging Polymer and Composite Technologies
  • Emerging Functional and Structural Materials

Course learning outcomes

  • Advanced understanding of polymer theory, properties and principles in engineering applications.
  • Ability to distinguish and evaluate composites and nanocomposites for targeted engineering applications.
  • Understanding and application of advanced electrical and optical materials in electronics and photonics.
  • Ability to evaluate and select light metals and ceramics for specific engineering applications.
  • Ability to evaluate biomaterials for medical use, focusing on biocompatibility, degradability and ethics.
  • Demonstrates capability to recommend materials based on polymer and composite processing knowledge.
