Course overview

This course provides students with integrated practical and theoretical experience in key chemical engineering principles, with a strong emphasis on unit operations, experimental methods, and professional engineering practice. Students develop competency in experimental planning and execution, including experimental design, statistical and regression analysis, and the treatment of errors, uncertainty, and error propagation. The course also introduces core process safety concepts, covering hazard identification techniques, risk assessment, and introductory hazard analysis to ensure safe operating procedures. In parallel, students build professional communication skills through technical report writing, focusing on academic language and structured technical documentation. Team-based activities are embedded throughout the course to strengthen collaboration and problem-solving skills. Overall, the course supports the program’s intent to demonstrate a chemical engineering body of knowledge and to apply this knowledge, alongside critical thinking, creativity, and innovation, to industrial and real-world complex problems.
