Course overview

The professional practice of chemical engineering, and related disciplines, relies on a broad range of discipline-specific and transferable professional skills. In this course, advanced topics in the professional practice of chemical engineering are studied. These elements relate to an understanding of the business environment facing professional engineers and include advanced project management, plant safety and HAZOP, risk analysis, development of design tools and the management of human and physical resources and sustainability. In this course students undertake a series of workshops, projects and case studies.

Course learning outcomes

  • Estimate capital costs of process plants and typical process equipment accounting for operating conditions and materials of construction.
  • Utilise Discounted Cash Flow analysis in conjunction with appropriate indicators to evaluate economic performance and viability of a process plant.
  • Estimate manufacturing costs associated with production processes.
  • Analyse and develop engineering documentation relevant to process and plant safety.
  • Classify and analyse typical process hazards and conduct hazard & operability studies.
  • Evaluate the safety of a system by assessing the effectiveness of existing safeguards against hazardous scenarios.
  • Size mechanical relief devices for protection against overpressure.
