Course overview

This course aims to develop students’ knowledge and skill in designing aesthetically compelling and meaningful products. By integrating design research, aesthetic principles, visual communication methods and hands-on material exploration, students will identify how aesthetics shape emotional connection, user perception and cultural significance. Through the application of this knowledge and these skills, students will critically evaluate, develop, and present industrial designs that are visually coherent, functionally relevant, ethically informed and meaningful to users.

Course learning outcomes

  • Identify how aesthetic principles and visual language influences user perception and cultural significance in industrial design.
  • Integrate design research with hands-on form development techniques to create an aesthetically compelling and functionally meaningful product.
  • Critically evaluate products for their aesthetic value, emotional impact, and usability, considering diverse cultural contexts and using established design analysis methods.
  • Apply creative and critical thinking skills to address design challenges, focusing on the aesthetic and functional considerations in industrial design.
  • Effectively communicate design concepts through sketches, models, documentation and verbal presentations.
  • Exhibit self-reflection and ethical awareness in course activities, personal design practice and shared studio environments.
