Course overview
Industrial Design Studio 4b (Production and Sustainability) aims to build on students' skills in designing and prototyping products for low volume manufacturing with a focus on sustainability. The course covers sustainable design principles, materials selection, and production techniques for small-scale manufacturing. Students will gain practical experience in creating environmentally responsible products, integrating theoretical knowledge with hands-on practice. This course encourages initiative in problem-solving and promotes adaptability and ethical accountability in professional industrial design practice.

Course learning outcomes
- Investigate and understand the aesthetic, functional, sustainable and commercial properties of materials and processes for application in low volume manufacturing applications.
- Select, use and integrate various digital and analogue methods for physical and digital prototyping of the visual, sustainable and functional aspects of a product.
- Investigate and understand the opportunities and constraints of integrating a technical package into a design.
- Conduct an iterative design process to develop a design through cycles of prototyping and evaluation using a range of virtual and physical techniques.
- Present and justify product design proposals using appropriate documentation, including physical prototypes, images, and text that communicate design intent.
- Analyse and describe the sustainability performance, manufacturing specifications and costing of a product.
