Course overview

This course aims to develop an advanced understanding of the complex integration of multiple organ systems such as neural, gastrointestinal, pulmonary, blood, musculoskeletal, renal and cardiovascular systems, and how they function in health, ageing and disease. By understanding the complex interaction of multiple physiological systems, learners will develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills related to the maintenance of normal body function.

Course learning outcomes

  • Describe the physiological complexity associated with living within extreme internal or external physiological environments.
  • Describe the hierarchical regulation of multiple physiological systems and how they integrate to maintain whole-body homeostasis in response to changing internal and external environments
  • Describe the physiological changes in multiple physiological systems that are associated with ageing and disease; specific focus includes cardiovascular, blood and the musculoskeletal systems.
  • Gather, analyse, rank and communicate complex physiological concepts to different target populations (e.g., experts, colleagues, lay people) in an ethical manner with integrity and recognition of professional, cultural and social diversity.
  • Describe and apply problem solving skills that illustrate creative multidisciplinary approaches that are aligned with physiological changes.
