Course overview
To develop introductory knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and languages, and impacts of colonisation in contemporary Australia, as the basis for developing reflective and culturally responsive health professionals.
Course learning outcomes
- Describe the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture pre-colonisation to the present
- Discuss Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander concepts of health and wellbeing, including interrelationships with culture, family and connection to country
- Describe the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians pre-colonisation and identify key events since colonisation that have impacted the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
- Describe the concept of strengths-based knowledge and communication and the application this approach to health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
- Examine the culture of health professions and the impacts of professional culture within the health system on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- Articulate the concept of cultural humility as a process of lifelong learning
