Course overview

The aim of this course is to consider sociological perspectives of physical health, physical activity and sport, and application of these perspectives to professional practice. Sociological perspectives of health, physical activity and sport. Paradigms of knowledge from sociological perspectives; investigation of popular misunderstandings concerning health, inactivity, exercise addiction, eating disorders, body image, physical activity and the environment, deviant behaviours and abuse within physical activity and sport; application of qualitative research methods to health and/or physical activity issues experienced by specific populations, including (but not confined to) women, men, children, older Australians, migrants/refugees, workers and Aboriginal and The aim of this course is torres Strait Islanders; sociological analysis and reflections of health professions in Australian society; applications to professional practice.

Course learning outcomes

  • Critically evaluate the role of health, physical activity and sport in contemporary cultures globally.
  • Describe key sociological paradigms of knowledge and their relationship to health, physical activity and sport, particularly health behaviours, sedentary behaviours, exercise addiction, eating disorders and body image.
  • Apply qualitative research methods to analyse health and/or physical activity issues experienced by specific populations.
  • Describe practices of health, physical activity and sport professionals that address sociological issues experienced by Australians.
