Course overview
This course aims to build on the student's pharmacotherapeutic knowledge to prepare them for safe, evidence-based prescribing aligned with the Quality Use of Medications and the Podiatry Board of Australia Registration standard: Endorsement for scheduled medicines guidelines. Students will develop competency in the clinical use of medications (S2, S3 and S4) on The National Podiatry Scheduled Medicines list. Areas of study are informed by the National Prescribing Competencies Framework. This course is designed to complement students ESM prescribing in practice exposure within WIL practice courses.
Course learning outcomes
- Synthesise a clients medical, cultural, and social history, with examination and diagnostic test findings to prescribe an appropriate scheduled medicines (S2, S3 & S4) with attention to ethical, social and financial considerations and within own scope of practice.
- Understand and comply with relevant Commonwealth, state, and territory legislative requirements and guidelines relating to the safe and effective use of pharmaceutical products.
- Critically apply knowledge of pharmacotherapeutics, the quality use of medicines, and the drug formulary available to Australian podiatrists in the context of responsible prescribing in podiatric practice.
- Use contemporary resources to support the best evidence-based use of pharmaceutical products in podiatry practice, including antimicrobial stewardship.
- Communicate clear verbal and/or written instructions to patients and /or family or carers on the administration of pharmaceutical products including advice on appropriate monitoring.
- Demonstrate appropriate interprofessional collaboration to monitor, assess and evaluate the efficacy of the intervention with particular reference to adverse reactions.
