Course overview

This course aims to develop knowledge and experience of the value and place of dance and alternative movement within education and lifelong physical activity pursuits. It will introduce students to a range of somatic and expressive movement styles, their physical, social, cognitive, and affective potential, as well as safe movement practices. The course will develop personal skills, body awareness, coordination, and flexibility as well as teaching methodologies to facilitate learning in educational contexts. Theoretical and pedagogical concepts are applied to movement experiences with a particular focus on individual development and the use of space to prepare graduates to teach people of all ages the value and joy of movement.

Course learning outcomes

  • Present meaningful dance and movement experiences tailored to diverse populations
  • Plan and build developmentally appropriate dance/movement experiences for a specific population
  • Identify the physical, social, cognitive and affective benefits of a particular dance form as well as educational outcomes and pedagogical practices
  • Develop and extend personal movement skills, including coordination, sequencing, memory, and technical proficiency and reflect on the pedagogies utilised
  • Apply and evaluate various pedagogical approaches to the teaching of dance and movement.
