Course overview

This course aims to foster a critical understanding of the role and functions of human resource activities within multinational Enterprises (MNEs). It explores key issues about the challenges in managing people across diverse institutional contexts. Topics include globalisation and the management of work, managing people across different national business systems, how multinational people management is shaped and transferred, expatriate management, pay compensation in MNEs, Equality and diversity, and employee voice. Through an examination of the context, strategies, and functional aspects of HRM in international settings, students gain insights into global workforce dynamics, labour regulations, and the complexities of managing across national systems.

Course learning outcomes

  • Apply the context of the international business setting to develop a critical understanding of human resource management across different institutional boundaries.
  • Critically assess and evaluate the complexities of managing human resources within international businesses and their implications for managers, workers and wider society in the global economy and the ethical implications of such approaches.
  • Reflect critically on theoretical and practice-based principles about the relationship between national and transnational institutions, and the implications of this for the management of people.
  • Demonstrate skills in self-management, problem solving, written communication when applying an international perspective to the management of people.
