Course overview

This course aims to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to the foundational research methods and measurement of human-computer interaction (HCI). It covers core concepts, principles, and methodologies, including user-centred design, usability evaluation, and interface prototyping. Students will learn how to apply these concepts to design effective user interfaces, enhance user experiences, and consider the ethical implications of design practices and products. 

Course learning outcomes

  • Articulate fundamental human-computer interaction principles, including user-centred design and usability, within the context of diverse design scenarios
  • Evaluate and critique existing products, highlighting their strengths, weaknesses, and potential areas for improvement based on theoretical frameworks and principles of human-computer interaction
  • Evaluate interface usability and functionality by quantitative and qualitative usability studies
  • Develop and iterate interface prototypes, incorporating user feedback to meet usability standards
  • Analyse the ethical and cultural implications of HCI designs, ensuring considerations of privacy and user autonomy are addressed
