Course overview
In this course students will develop a balanced organisational and technical perspective of the principal elements of cybersecurity, and become proficient in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the governance aspects of security in organisations within the defence, space and related industries. Students will gain advanced skills and knowledge in the following:
Core security principles including confidentiality, integrity, and availability (CIA).
The contemporary cybersecurity threat landscape.
End-to-end security implementation for a corporate network.
Principles of symmetric and asymmetric cryptography.
Roles and responsibilities of a cybersecurity professional.
Approaches and techniques for the identification and protection of organisational IT assets.
Methods for detecting, responding to, and recovering from cybersecurity attacks.
Utilising a cybersecurity framework to develop appropriate policies and procedures.
Course learning outcomes
- Develop effective strategies for cybersecurity risk management including assessment, mitigation and response, in the Defence and Space sector
- Lead the design and implementation of a cybersecurity culture within the organisation, fostering awareness, preparedness and resilience among all levels of staff
- Evaluate the ethical, legal and social implications of cybersecurity decisions and incorporate these considerations into cybersecurity leadership and policy development
- Understand the role of emerging technologies (AI, Quantum computing, Blockchain) in shaping the cybersecurity landscape, and strategically lead their adoption for enhanced security
- Lead the collaboration and partnership with national and international regulatory bodies, industry partners and other stakeholders to promote and advance the state of cybersecurity cooperation, build cybersecurity capacity and promulgate security operations and incident response best practices
