Course overview

This course provides students with a comprehensive introduction to constructive journalism. Students will explore and analyse emerging constructive approaches such as solutions journalism, restorative narrative, Indigenous reporting, peace journalism, reciprocal journalism, future-oriented reporting, and solidarity journalism. After exploring the ethical basis of constructive journalism and its intersections with social justice, diverse communities, and society, students will apply what they have learned to constructive journalism production.

Course learning outcomes

  • Articulate how constructive journalism approaches shift away from traditional, and western hegemonic, journalism practices and analyse and their role in society
  • Evaluate techniques of constructive journalism in a range of news contexts, mediums, and within diverse communities
  • Analyse theoretical and ethical underpinnings of emerging forms of constructive journalism
  • Apply the techniques of constructive journalism to journalism practice by creating original work underpinned by the theoretical and ethical considerations of the emerging genre
  • Participate and collaborate in newsroom settings, peer-reviews, and reflect on constructive journalistic practices
