Course overview

The course aims to empower students to address the moral, scientific, political, economic, and legal challenges posed by climate change and its impacts. It explores the origins, evolution, and contemporary practice of international climate change law, with particular attention to the relationship between law, science, and politics. The course examines Australian and international legal frameworks relating to climate change and critically analyses the interaction between climate change law and other areas of domestic and international law and policy. Students will develop the knowledge and skills required to become energetic and adaptable practitioners and advisers, capable of applying creative, critical, and ethical thinking to develop innovative and practical solutions to climate change challenges. 

Course learning outcomes

  • Identify and explain the science and economics of climate change and their relationship with the law in response to a climate change problem
  • Conduct research on the Australian climate change legal framework and critically analyse relevant Australian legal policy in response to a climate change problem
  • Identify, apply, and explain relevant ethical obligations related to creating solutions to a climate change problem
  • Critically analyse relevant international law policy and its relationship with climate change in response to a climate change problem
  • Apply and explain relevant principles from the Australian and international legal frameworks related to climate change to advise workable solutions to a climate change problem
