Course overview
In this course, students will develop trial advocacy skills in the context of a criminal trial. The course will cover the principal stages of a criminal trial, including voir dire applications, opening addresses, witness examination, and closing addresses. Students will begin the course learning from interactive live demonstrations of advocacy skills by practising lawyers in lectures and then practise those skills in interactive workshops. This then culminates in student teams conducting a simulated criminal trial, from beginning to end, over several weeks.
This elective course is intended for students concurrently undertaking or having already completed Evidence, who wish to develop their advocacy skills beyond the opportunities available in that course. The course is intentionally designed to complement Evidence, with its structure and activities aligned to support and reinforce learning across both courses. Students should be prepared to engage fully with the advocacy activities, as consistent attendance and participation are essential and significant preparation is required throughout the course.
